TOM LEE

Profesor y pareja sentimental de Arthur Russell

“The list could be nearly endless because I hear the tenderness of Arthur’s voice, his sense of humor, wonder and observations in each of his songs, which also allows me to re-connect with him any time I listen. There are many songs, especially within the “World of Echo” collection, where Arthur sings phrases that are mindful of conversations and observations we had together, just little personal moments while at home or walking on the streets of New York together. I am most thankful for the memories they hold for me.

  • Arthur Russell – Platform On the Ocean

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRXTN6YXJFM

I have always been mesmerized by the driving rhythms of this song, it beautifully combines elements Arthur was striving for at this time… blending his voice and cello, trombone, drums and keyboards to echo far into oceanic depths. This was a song that Arthur most played for me while he was working on the various edits and takes. As with many of his songs I have memories of walking or riding around New York City on my bicycle while listening to them on a Walkman.

  • Arthur Russell – Lucky Cloud

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjVqSbU4Vok

Arthur would play numerous solo gigs, and they increasingly included more and more echo boxes and programmed drum machine elements. Many of those songs are included on the World of Echo album and I love to lose myself in that entire collection, however; my favorite version of “Lucky Cloud” is the simplest one from “Another Thought”, just Arthur and his cello echoing softly in beautiful harmony…. “One, yeah, kiss and I go overboard.”

  • Arthur Russell – That’s us / Wild combination

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwlsdSutsQw

To me this is one of Arthur’s anthem, in the spirit of “Let’s Go Swimming”, “Tell You Today” and ‘In The Light of the Miracle”. These songs represent Arthur’s spirit of urgency and celebration. He crafted those songs with such dedication, striving to balance many different musical and lyrical elements, combining bits of nostalgia that honor family memories along with contemporary imagery of love and tenderness, all rhythmically mixed into a very non-traditional song structure. I grew so familiar with this song that it seemed to be very much out in the world even when I was the only one listening to cassette tapes of it over and over and over.

My very favorite version is along with the video a fan made on Youtube where Kermit the frog appears to be singing Wild Combination/That’s Us. We were big fans of The Muppet Show and the movies. Arthur would have truly enjoyed seeing Kermit singing one of his songs!

It has been nice to think over these various songs, but now I’ve left out, “Don’t Forget About Me”, and “Kid Like You” and “Love Comes Back,” “A Little Lost”, and so much more!!!”
